Abstract:
This image is part of a collection of images contributed by Mustakim Gierdien. This contribution is linked to his story published by ALSA: “ From district Six to Antarctica”. The publication, written by Mustakim Gierdien, a retired employee of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI), is a deeply personal narrative. It chronicles Mustakim's journey from his early years growing up in District Six, Cape Town, to his eventual involvement in the Antarctic and Island programme through DPWI. This story is not fictional. It is told entirely in Kim's own words, reflecting his personal experiences, views, and emotions. The perspectives presented are his alone and do not necessarily represent those of ALSA, SANAP, or affiliated institutions such as the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), the National Research Foundation (NRF), or DPWI. Image description: Picture taken after supper showing skidoos and crane bulldozer with its 21-foot sled parked for the night. Vehicles parked against any oncoming snow storm to reduce massive sastrugi build up. Bottom section of SANAE IV ribcage and its supporting structure almost entirely completed. Outer layer base of A-Block appears to be complete as well as half of helipad.
