Two long, parallel magnetic profiles contain a nearly complete history of seafloor spreading between the African and Antarctic plates from about 80 million years ago to the present. Comparison of data north and south of the presently spreading Southwest Indian Ridge demonstrates clearly that during this time the overall addition of seafloor to the separating plates has been symmetric.
