In the eighteen years since the discovery of the radiation belts by James van Alien our knowledge of the earth's immediate surroundings in space has advanced beyond recognition. The earth is the small sphere towards the left, and the van Alien radiation belts are represented by the dotted region labelled 'trapped particles'.
