The important influence that conditions in the Southern Ocean have on the nature of the global ocean are most obvious in the Southern Ocean's influence on the subtropical gyres in the South Atlantic, South Indian and South Pacific Ocean. In this contribution a review is presented of the existing knowledge of the interaction between the Southern Ocean and the first two of the abovementioned oceans which have the most direct influence on South Africa. A number of gaps in the existing knowledge are identified and research programmes suggested to fill these gaps.
