In certain environments, for example in the Antarctic, the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen by blue-green algae may play an important part in soil fertility and thus in plant growth. During the 1965-66 expedition to Marion Island it was found that the surface of many of the mires is covered by a thick gelatinous layer of Cyanophytes.
