Abstract:
Johan Viljoen’s PhD research focuses on marine biogeochemistry, studying how phytoplankton in the Southern Ocean interact with nutrients throughout the seasons. Johan has taken part in three research cruises on South Africa’s research ship, the S.A. Agulhas II. For his first cruise - a summer resupply mission to Antarctica - he even missed his BSc (Hons) graduation to join and collect samples for several projects. He wrote a blog about his experience on the Antarctic ice shelf during this cruise.
