Johan Grobbelaar on board the Gallieni. In early 1972 the Second Biological Expedition to Marion Island, managed by Eduard van Zinderen-Bakker and led by Johan Grobbelaar, departed from Cape Town on board the French vessel, the Gallieni. The vessel was on route to Kerguelen, but made a special stop at Marion Island to drop off the expedition members. The men remained on the island until the following take over in May 1972.
