About This Repository

This is an on-going archive as run by the Antarctic Legacy of South Africa (ALSA) based at the Department of Botany and Zoology, Stellenbosch University. ALSA project aims to collect and store the stories, memories, photographs and other documents pertaining to South Africans in the Antarctic and on the Sub-Antarctic Islands since the turn of the previous century.

The scientific role South Africans have played in the Sub-Antarctic Ocean has never been fully recognized until now, with this project. Through this database, we hope to do justice and give acknowledgement to these men and women. This archive also serves as the primary source of research-material regarding the personal and professional experiences of South African scientists, who have worked in the Sub-Antarctic Region. The photographs and documents in this archive are from the personal collections of many of South Africa’s finest Antarctic and Marion scientists and explorers.

Entries in the archive is since the heroic age till present time. The archive is divided into different collections as to make browsing through the archive easier. Read the How to section on how to search through the archive.
