Abstract:
A Weekend Argus article by Sam Sole (1994) reporting on a South African-led Antarctic research expedition aboard the SA Agulhas. Headed by Dr Mike Lucas of UCT, the team of 35 scientists from South Africa, Russia, and Norway aimed to study biological and physical processes at the sea-ice margin as part of the international Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS). The research focused on how the Southern Ocean absorbs carbon dioxide and influences climate, with implications for global warming and rainfall patterns in southern Africa. This material is part of a collection contributed by Mustakim Gierdien, that he used for writing his book “ From district Six to Antarctica”, published September 2025 by ALSA.
