Abstract:
This document forms part of the framework established under the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty (Madrid Protocol, 1991), which designates Antarctica as a natural reserve devoted to peace and science. There are a total of six annexes to the Protocol; this is Annex V. It provides the framework for designating Antarctic Specially Protected Areas (ASPAs), Antarctic Specially Managed Areas (ASMAs), and Historic Sites and Monuments (HSMs).
