Abstract:
Presentation by Pierre J. Cilliers, delivered at the International Polar Year and International Heliophysical Year Regional Workshop, 25–27 October 2006. This presentation discusses South Africa’s participation in the IPY/IHY Polar Space Weather Studies. The International Polar Year (IPY) will take place from March 2007 to March 2009 and is set to be the largest and most interdisciplinary polar science initiative ever undertaken. According to the International IPY Programme Office, approximately 50,000 people from over 60 countries—organized into more than 200 international project clusters—will work together to study nearly every aspect of the polar regions. These projects span a wide range of disciplines, including the physical, life, and social sciences.
