Documents relating to activity in Antarctic region between 1947-48 (pertinent issues are scientific and meteorological research, arbitration of territorial claims, whaling, sealing).Mostly correspondance re the matter of Argentine and Chilean “encroachments" upon the Falkland Island Dependencies. Expresses views of several countries – U.S.A., France, Britain, Germany, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, South Africa, Norway – concerning matters of sovereignty and territorial claims in the Antarctic.Activities of a number of countires in the Antarctic. France: proposed French expedition to Greenland and Adelie Land, 1948-1952. Russia: Soviet whaling ship Slava II caught fire in Duncan dock when on point of sailing. Suspicions that the ship carried cargo of hidden building material needed to establish themselves in Antarctic were groundless, 1947; U.S.A: points taken from an article in the New York Times re the Finn Ronne expedition, 1947; Chile: departure of a Chilean expedition to the Antarctic, 1948. Mentions the Scott Polar Research Institute: brief description of (formation, activities, management, finances, etc.); Union Government to contribute to their funds. Also contains the minutes of a meeting of the Polar Committee, 1948. Also refers to the Bogota conference to be held in 1948.
