Abstract:
This report assesses the bio-physical and socio economic impacts associated with tourism to
Marion Island. Marion
Island is the largest of two islands in the South African Prince Edward Islands group, which lies
in the Southern Ocean about 1700 km from the South African coast. (See Figures 1 & 2). On the
basis of this assessment, recommendations are made on how to avoid or mitigate negative impacts and
optimise positive impacts.
The report will inform the decision ofthc Director-General ofthe Department of Environmental
Affairs and Tourism
(DEA&T) whether and under what conditions tourism to the Prince Edwards Islands will be allowed.
If necessary, the report will be used in the development of a policy for tourism at the Prince
Edward Islands for incorporation into the existing management plan for the islands.
