dc.description.abstract abstract en_ZA
dc.description.abstract For many years South Africa's Antarctic research was focussed exclusively on the Antarctic continent and on the subantarctic islands Gough and Marion and their immediate vicinities, with only occasional interest shown in the ocean areas traversed. Since the 1970s, however, considerable work has been carried out on the Southern Ocean, on acoustic determinations of krill stocks and on the influence of subantarctic islands on their oceanic environment. en_ZA
