Captain Cook, who sighted but did not land at the Prince Edward islands in 1776, mentions seeing 憄enguins and shags, the former so numerous that the rocks seemed covered with them as with a crust. This appears to be the earliest reference to the birds on these islands which had been 憃fficially discovered by the French explorer, Marion Dufresne, in 1772. |
