dc.description.abstract |
HMSAS Transvaal, was used in the secret operation "Snoektown",to annex the Prince Edward Islands. It departed Cape Town on 12 December 1947 and landed at Marion Island on 29 Decemebr 1947, claiming Marion Island as South African territory. Lt-Cmdr Fairbairn and Petty Officer Steward Schott placed a metal South African flag and brass plate inscribed: "HMSAS TRANSVAAL – date 29:12:47" on Marion Island, and a similar one a few days later on Prince Edward Island. |
