Abstract:
This presentation explores the idea of establishing a museum in South Africa to preserve and promote the country's Antarctic heritage for future generations. It highlights South Africa’s unique position as the only African signatory to the Antarctic Treaty and its role as a gateway city to Antarctica. The presentation outlines the country's historical involvement in the region, the work of the Antarctic Legacy of South Africa (ALSA), and the challenges faced, such as language, logistics, education, economics, and technology. It concludes by proposing future options, including a physical museum in Cape Town or a virtual museum, to foster awareness and cultural memory across all South African communities.
