Abstract:
This research plan outlines South Africa’s strategic scientific objectives for Antarctica and the Southern Ocean for the period 2014–2024. It begins by positioning South Africa within the global Antarctic research context, emphasizing the country's unique geographic advantage and its long-standing commitment as a founding member of the Antarctic Treaty System. The document reflects on the evolution of South Africa’s involvement in the region through the South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP), supported by substantial government investments in infrastructure such as SANAE IV, the Marion Island base, and the SA Agulhas II vessel. The plan is structured around four integrated research themes: Earth Systems, Living Systems, Human Enterprise, and Innovation. These themes are designed to support a systems-level understanding of environmental and societal dynamics, spanning atmospheric, oceanic, and terrestrial domains. The plan also addresses key constraints such as limited logistical capacity, the need for robust technical infrastructure, and gaps in coordination and human capital development. It proposes solutions to enhance data management, infrastructure design, public awareness, and international collaboration. By aligning national research priorities with global scientific challenges—such as climate change and biodiversity conservation—this plan provides a roadmap for advancing South Africa’s role in polar science, while supporting innovation, international collaboration, and capacity building.
