dc.description.abstract The document was delivered at the Antarctic Logistics Symposium in Leningrad 1982. Prepared by KW Jacobs of the Department of Community Development. The new design differs fr□m the previous wooden box construction in the following respects with the outer steel shell taking up all the external pressures and an inner box structure providing adequate thermal insulation. The disadvantages of the old base is discussed, followed by the concept and advantages of the new base from the planning stages, through the construction stages up to the maintenance stage All the problems and solutions are mentioned in the various stages. en_ZA
